IRB Driver Course

The IRB Driver course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely operate and manage an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) during surf rescue operations.

Course Requirements

To undertake this course, candidates must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age to commence training
  • Be at least 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Hold and be currently proficient in the IRB Crewperson Certificate
  • Meet local state or territory marine licensing requirements (where applicable)

Course Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants will be equipped with the skills to operate and maintain an IRB as part of surf lifesaving operations.

Participants will also receive the following nationally recognised units of competency:

  • PUAEQU001B – Prepare, maintain and test response equipment
  • PUASAR014A – Operate and maintain a small powercraft and motor for rescue operations


These units contribute towards the PUA31312 Certificate III in Public Safety (Aquatic Search and Rescue).
