Bronze Medallion

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness, enabling them to take part in lifesaving operations. It is the core award required to become a surf lifesaver in Australia.

The Bronze Medallion is a challenging but rewarding course that encourages you to step outside your comfort zone, build confidence, perform under pressure and work as part of a team – all while enjoying the experience alongside like-minded members.

Course Requirements

To undertake this award, candidates must:

  • Be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Complete a 400 metre unaided swim (goggles or mask permitted) in 9 minutes or less


The swim must be completed in a swimming pool of at least 25 metres, or over a measured open water course. This will be observed prior to any water training or assessment activities, and evidence must be provided to the Assessor on the appropriate form before commencing assessment.

Course Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded the PUA20119 Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue), which includes the following units of competency:

  • PUAOPE013 Operate communications systems and equipment
  • PUASAR012 Apply surf awareness and self-rescue skills
  • PUASAR013 Participate in an aquatic rescue operation
  • HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support
  • PUACOM001 Communicate in the workplace
    PUATEA001 Work in a team
  • PUATEA004 Work effectively in a public safety organisation
  • PUAWHS001 Follow defined work health and safety policies and procedures

Assessment

Following the training period, participants will be assessed through a combination of physical and theoretical components. This includes the classic 200m run – 200m swim – 200m run, completed in under 8 minutes.

Additional assessments may include board rescues, tube rescues, resuscitation, first aid scenarios and beach management activities.
