Surf Rescue Certificate

The aim of the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness, enabling them to take part in lifesaving operations, including Warriewood patrols. This course is the minimum water safety qualification for Junior Activity supervision.

Course Requirements

Candidates must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Be at least 13 years of age on the date of assessment
  • Complete a 200 metre swim in 5 minutes or less, unaided (goggles or mask permitted)


The swim must be completed in a swimming pool of at least 25 metres, or over a measured open water course. This will be observed prior to any water training or assessment activities. Evidence must be provided to the Assessor using a completed timed swim form before commencing the assessment.

Course Outcome

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be awarded the SLSA Surf Rescue Certificate, along with the following nationally recognised units of competency:

  • PUAOPE013 Operate communications systems and equipment
  • PUASAR012 Apply surf awareness and self-rescue skills
  • PUASAR013 Participate in an aquatic rescue operation
  • HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation


Some of these units may contribute towards the PUA20119 Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue).
